As I walk down the length of the lobby down to Cal 27, in search of M, a rather disgruntled Sourav Ganguly walks by, followed by a rather harassed-looking aide. I smirk silently and lengthen my stride, because M would not be pleased if I arrive after the starters.
Because M is particular about these things.
Taj Bengal opened its gates in 1989 (its been 30 years, congratulations!), and it has been known as one of the most luxurious properties of the city ever since. As a child (and a teenager), I had had the opportunity to dine there a few times, courtesy The Pater, and I fondly remember afternoons spent munching the signature Gulu Chicken (Now don’t ask me how that came along), and walking around, picking up slices of pastries from La Patisserie.
In time, I met R who shared my love for The Hub’s Wild Mushroom Risotto and Chocolate Truffle Cake, and I knew I had met a kindred soul. When I recollected the dish fondly a few months ago, right after the launch of Cal 27, little did I know that I would be in for a surprise today.
The Cal 27 Lunch
As I finally spot M and D sitting on one of the well-lit tables overlooking the glorious blue pool (And how I longed to plunge into it!), I breathe out a sigh of relief, and firmly ensconce myself on a comfortable chair. Chef Sujoy Gupta is there, explaining to us a few new additions to the a-la-carte menu of Cal 27, and to my delight, I spot my beloved Wild Mushroom Risotto and immediately place an order while D chooses to order its seafood counterpart. A man of simple needs, ASB wants Kosha Mangsho and he’s happy with his portion.
Chef Sujoy Gupta produces a Bocconcini, Pesto, Sunchoke Tomato, and Rucola Pizza, mildly fragrant with olive oil, but the highlight being the sharpness of the tomatoes in wonderful contrast to the creamy bocconcini – the pesto adding a much-needed herbal twang. Personally, I find the rucola (for the uninitiated, rocket salad) slightly superficial, but you can always put your fork to good use and push it aside, while preserving the generous shaves of Parmesan.
The end to our meal comes with a Chocolate Mud Pie, that releases a bounty of molten chocolate at the touch of my spoon, and I scoop off bits and pieces from D’s plate, giggling with childlike glee, the lazy afternoon sun making me feel like taking a nap. Shortly after, we retire to our rooms, and I take full advantage of this short window by going to the poolside, which proves to be quite deep on the far end.
Rooms at Taj Bengal, Kolkata
Taj Bengal has a considerable number of options to pick from, with 229 grand rooms and suites – though we are allotted the Premium Suites, I walk around the renovated segment of the property, admiring the decor of the Grand Luxury and Luxury Suites.
The Premium Suites have well-appointed 4-fixture bathrooms, offering access to the Club Lounge, and includes a Butler on call. I take advantage of their express Laundry service as well as the pool, which also features a steam segment that soothes and rejuvenates the body and relaxes the mind after a long, leisurely swim.
I like the large bathroom and especially the bath tub, the amenities provided at the well-stocked minibar, and the complementary fruits and wine provide an added bonus. Taj Bengal Premium Suites also come with complementary toiletries, a hair dryer, slippers, an ironing board, and a safe, not to mention a plethora of options to munch on, like biscuits and nuts.
Here’s a glimpse of their luxurious Suites:
The luxury suites are all designed around themes, and while one take inspiration from the Rajput heritage, some are inspired by the city and the various nuances of it. This is also reflected in the menu of Cal 27, where Chef Sujoy promises to add more local touches. Furthermore, for the guests, Taj provides complementary Masala Tea and ‘jhalmuri’ in the evenings, as part of enhancing guest experience.
Dinner is a superlative affair at Sonargaon, and I promise to put that experience up in a separate blog post soon! I have to admit, the check-in and check-out process are both extremely smooth, and my stay is a pleasant one this time.

Sonargaon is a wonderful place. Waiting for your review.
Stayed here last time I was in Kolkata. Our experience in Cal 27 buffet was not up to the mark, but their alacarte food was good.
Okay.
