All right, it seems to be the right time to make a true confession about Black Dog Triple Gold Reserve.
At first when I tried it, I liked it, but did not love it. I felt that it was good, but then… so was many other blends of excellent whiskey. What was so special about this one? Truthfully, I was slightly forward in making my decision known.
But then, I decided to give it another try the next day.
And I was surprised. Because the taste was the same, yet, was there something different? Why did the notes feel different to me? The first day I had tasted malt and toast, so what was the little burst of grapes doing on my palate?
Stunned, I looked at the glass containing the liquor.
The next day revealed more. This time, there were woody notes and the tiniest hint of… berries? There were other notes of course, but the taste seemed to bring new notes every time I tasted. Intrigued, I decided to find out the secret behind such a unique range of flavor.
Black Dog Triple Gold Reserve has been triple matured, as I have said before. The maturation process is long, and carefully done under the expert gaze of a master blender who created a blend which was a mixture of malt and grain whiskey aged in Bourbon and then, after blending, Sherry casks. Naturally, the blend contained many individual notes, as they underwent the process of distillation and aging.
That is why the experience of drinking Triple Gold Reserve improves from one day to the next, revealing to me notes that can only be discovered after you have been slowly consuming it for days, weeks, months. A fabulous drink that truly is mysterious and intriguing.
A mystery that I love savoring.
