When I first tried to go to Main Land China 4-6 High Tea event, my best friend was slightly adamant, so we ditched the plan and went off somewhere else. But then, I returned once again with another friend, and decided to try out the buffet.
Clockwise from the top – Chinese-Style fried potatoes, Battered Chicken Wings, Chicken in Oyster Sauce, Cucumbers Pickles and Kimchi. |
The weekend high tea buffet is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. every weekend, and it consists of a nice spread of vegetarian and non-vegetarian items from the MLC menu.
However, my pet crib about the buffet is this – they do not have any tea or other drinks served with the buffet. Or soup. I mean, what is a Chinese buffet without soup? It’s like a song with no name.
Crib aside, this buffet is not big, but it is substantial. There are some hits and misses in it. My first platter, for example, had only one hit- which was the Chicken in Oyster sauce, where lovely slices of chicken breast were cooked in a light gravy. The rest was average – the potatoes were slightly under-cooked, the chicken wings were too dry and not crispy, and the Kimchi was average (i.e. it was Kolkata Kimchi, and thus, not fermented).
My second plate was, however, way more promising.
Clockwise from the top – Garlic Szechuan Noodles topped with more of that chicken in Oyster Sauce, Braised Vegetables with Cloud Ear Fungus and the Mushroom fried rice |
Here, you can see that I went back for more of that chicken, only I wanted the noodles with it too, so I piled some on top of the noodles. On the other side, I found this scrumptious vegetable dish, and though there were other vegetarian dishes (and fish dish) in the menu, I barely looked up since I saw Mushroom Fried Rice, and zoned into it. The rice with the vegetable dish was, in one word, gorgeous.
I was struggling with my food at this point, so I decided to wait a bit before attacking dessert. They had Darsaan, and four different types of ice-cream, and fresh fruits.
I am not much of a fresh fruits person.
Strawberry Ice Cream, Darsaan, and Tutti-Fruity Ice-cream |
Though the ice creams were store-bought, they were served with a slightly grainy chocolate sauce (which I started avoiding after taking the first bite), and the Tutti fruity icecream really hit the spot with the Darsaan. I loved this one – crisp flat noodles fried and dunked in sugar – a fantastic combination.
The meal cost me and my friend exactly 699/- including all taxes (350/- per person), so I was pretty happy to have a full stomach at a very reasonable price, and some of the dishes were really great.
This buffet is possibly temporary, so you will have to check with MLC if they serve it on weekends before visiting.
