Three Amazing Things I Ate Recently in Kolkata, or, Why I am Boring

There is something in the statement “Familiarity Breeds Contempt.” Yet, these things I have been eating on a virtually regular basis in Kolkata, and I am yet to be bored. Ladies and gents, please come along now as I enumerate the three amazing things I have eaten recently in Kolkata.

1. The Chicken Fooyung at Pao Chen, Gariahat.

For those of you who love this Chinese food joint near Gariahat crossing and are a fan, I would suggest eating this huge, fluffy Omelette, filled with chicken and scallion bits. I love it. It is around 100/-, but a great option for those who want to eat something protein rich and crispy on the edges with bits of chicken in them and are die-hard egg lovers. I personally am, and I therefore consume. Sorry for the flashed out photo, but inside Pao Chen, the lights are slightly low, so well…

2. Tiramisu Flavored Gelato at Mamma Mia, Ballygunge.

As I write this, the system clock shows 19 degrees here in Kolkata, and the temperature will go lower. However, this lovely thing, which I had last on my friend S’s birthday, and then again the other day because I could not forget the flavor has the right balance of booze and coffee, without tasting seriously creamy and it is not too sweet. For me, a good Gelato has to have that balance between fluffiness and smoothness and this one passes the test. Priced at around 49/- a scoop (more when you add taxes), this is a gorgeous dessert option for me.

3. Ema Dashi at The Blue Poppy, Sikkim House, Middleton Row.

Silky soupy cheese with huge chillies in it. Perfect for pieces of Ting Momo, a kind of Tibetan bread, dipped in it. Where did it come from, you say? Why, its supposed to be the National Dish of Bhutan! Its HOT if you chew the chillies, otherwise, a pleasant heat sensation will run through the length of time you keep the silky soup in your mouth.

Yes, I am in love with this. And for 80/- for the Ema Dashi (also spelled Datshi and Dazhi in some places), and 30/- per Ting Momo (or Tee momo, or T-momo, as it is also called, Edit: Spin Points out, Tingmo too), I am not complaining. Makes for a fabulous lunch when you are not into eating meat.

Gets me thinking into exploring more vegetarian options from around my city.

I’m too much of a meat-eater to let that challenge go, by the way.

  1. Elo Srin,

Dekh maa, jaa lekha achhe, taa pore likhechhi, so amake tingmo mingmo bole jalaabina. BTW, tor maa ke dekhlam ajke… ki shundor lagchhilo ekta silk er sari pore. Also, Dilli te kothaaay?? Ami hoyto next month (i.e. End December – Early January) jete pari. I want to know where it is.

  2. Its 'tingmo' not 'ting momo'. Sikkim House cheese curry is too watery and had globs of cheese in it last time I ate it there. Not good. I've only had cheese curry in two other places, the first time is when some of my friends made it and it was lovely and thick, with potatoes, and the second is at a restaurant in Delhi where its thin but smooth at the top of the bowl and gets thicker as you finish it. Soooo good and quite cheap too.

  3. all r amazing and tempting…!!!!!! wud sure male a visit to pao chen.. thanks fr sharing..
