Located close to the juncture where Southern Avenue meets the road leading to Kalighat Metro Station, The Palms is, true to its name, quiet and peaceful, and rather unassuming to look at first. However, after a close inspection of the menu, you would find a rather interesting mix of items to pick from their two menus – Indian and Oriental. By Oriental, don’t expect the usual fare – the menu boasts of a rather skillfully cooked crisp squid and a lotus root salad which is singular in its taste.
However, I was rather interested in the Indian segment of the menu, and as it was a hot summer’s day, we decided to pick out some of the signature dishes from the menu. Between the three of us, we picked a few, and while S wanted the Kasundi Mahi, with flaky fish and a rather strong hit of mustard (which I felt overpowered the fish), the chef sent over a lovely chicken kabab he had whipped up in the kitchen, covered with a fluffy egg omelette, with cubes of soft chicken inside.
The Veg Seekh Kabab was, for me, a rather simple, yet perfectly executed dish, with a crust which held on its shape until it was consumed, and then, the kabab would simply disintegrate in your mouth, revealing the nubbins of peas, carrots, and other assorted vegetables within. A great way to start off a meal!
For our mains, after the rather heavy onslaught of Kababs, we had decided to pick a chicken dish, and a vegetarian dish. The Murg Musallam was nice, with a bit too much tomato in the gravy, but the pieces of chicken were cooked till tender, and the accompanying tandoori rotis were great for mopping up the last bits of the gravy. We were recommended the Peshawari naan with it, and it was flaky and tender, with plenty of desiccated coconut and crisp almonds studding it.
However, the Maharaja Kofta, with a layer of soft, homemade cottage cheese, mildly sweetened and encased in a spicy spinach shell, deep fried and served in a rather succulent makhni gravy was what stole this particular show, and we couldn’t stop eating it. Our meal ended here, but then, I was invited to a zomato meet on another occasion, and I will post a few photos from the event (you can check out my review here.
