The Noodle Story is a chain of kiosks I’ve been seeing around town. Created around the idea of customization, the brand offers the users the choice of making their own noodle box, with an array of sauces and additions. The customer creates his/her own noodle dish by mixing and matching between noodles, vegetables and protein, and then can add their their choice of sauce. You can find their menu updated regularly here.
Apart from noodles, they also have rice as another option. In noodles, some interesting variations were Udon, Spinach, Soba, and Tomato noodles. I was curious about the Malaysian Chili Sauce, and decided to make it with rice, chicken, plenty of vegetables, and an egg on top. The result was quite spicy and sweet, and while not exactly Malaysian, it was a rather interesting combination.
There are also different kinds of Baos on offer. They don’t serve pork, but the Mushroom and Cheese Bao, as well as the Char Siu Chicken Bao are both quite decent, where my vote would go to the Mushroom one over Chicken, simply because of the strands of stringy cheese which is clearly visible after cutting into one. The concept of The Noodle Story has got a very South-East Asian vibe, but the sauces are quite generic (i.e. The Vietnamese isn’t really Vietnamese, if you know what I mean), which basically means a bit of a bastardisation of a cuisine.
I did order a second bowl with some Flat Rice Noodles, plenty of vegetables, and a Spicy Hot Garlic Sauce (supposedly Indonesian), with some fried garlic thrown on top. I liked the slippery yet chewy texture of the noodle – not overcooked, with the vegetables cooked but still retaining their crunch. They also were kind enough to pack the leftovers, which is also a part of their anti-wastage policy. I found the packaging to be quite fun – very similar to American Chinatown packages, complete with pairs of Chopsticks (again, something I like). An average meal for two at The Noodle Story is going to be roughly 350-500 INR (plus tax), so not a bad deal for a rainy afternoon when you’re craving noodles. Plus, they deliver (via Swiggy in my area).
Disclaimer: Poorna Banerjee was invited to The Noodle Story for a tasting by the brand.
