At any given point of time in the evening on a Saturday, until they run out, this is the crowd in front of Apanjan.
For those who do not know what Apanjan is, well, this is a small shop near Kalighat, which is known for its fish fry. Of course, there are other things on the menu as well. I have tried their Fish Pakora. But the thing is, if you haven’t had the Fish Fry at Apanjan, you have missed out on something.
The beauty of this place lie in the swiftness. Even huge orders take no more than 10 minutes to make, and if you are lucky and come well before six, you can even get exactly what you have ordered (believe me, the swiftness with which they get sold out is insane). And the best part is … the fry.
The fries are served with a bit of mustard and onion-cucumber ‘salad’. Both are superficial. The beauty of this fry lie in the thick fillet of white fish coated in breadcrumbs and fried. The thin layer of crunchy breadcrumbs cannot hide the buttery fillet of Bhetki fish within, which flakes and dissolves in your mouth. Best eaten hot, this is what real fish fry of Kolkata is like.
Of course, Apanjan serves other things. But its all about the fry here. All about the fry.
