Pongal at Rasam, The Stadel, Salt Lake, Kolkata (13th to 17th January, 2016)

Rasam at The Stadel is holding its Pongal event between 13th and 17th January, 2016 this year, and I dropped in yesterday to have a little taste. The special Pongal menu consists of house specialities like the Amma Dosa, Pesarattu, Gunappam, and sweet and savoury Pongal to celebrate the season of harvest and merriment.

Gunappam
Gunappam

A great way to start was with the Gunappam, which were perfectly cooked balls of dough, with pieces of coconut in them. There was a mild peppery kick, and these little balls were terrific when served piping hot, and the best way to eat them would be to gently pull them apart and cool them off in the soothing green chutney, and top off with a dash of the white coconut one. I have to admit, I found the green chutney to be a rather lovely thing, and wished it was served with the dosas as well.

Pesarattu

The Pesarattu was served with a filling of moong dal and it was nice, if a little bland. I liked the texture of this particular dosa, thick and comforting, not those thin anomalies available around town. This was satisfyingly chewy and soft, perfect for wrapping around a bit of the filling.

Warangal Dosa

I also liked the spicy Warangal Dosa, which was spread with a rich red chutney that gave it the lovely red hue. Once again, this was a soft and spicy affair, with slices of green chillies letting themselves know as you bite into it, and it would be one of my favourite things from the menu.

However, what is the occasion of Pongal without some of its namesake being served? There are two types of Pongal to choose from – The Venn Pongal is laden with drumsticks and is spicy but rather comforting at the same time.

And if you want to end it all on a sweet note, the Sakkarai Pongal would be the perfect end, just make sure you have a couple of people accompanying you to finish this – its a rather heavy dessert.

Of course, who can forget some coffee, and this was strong, sweet and a great way to round off your meal. The Special Pongal Menu at Rasam will be over this weekend, so head over to The Stadel to get a taste of the same. The prices are kept pretty reasonable, between 100-180 per dish, and a meal for two would roughly cost 400-500 INR.
