There are times when I sort of think my friends suck, because guess what, they are those people who make me lust for things which I probably do not need in my life. However, I sort of, kind of, wanted the Maybelline LipGradation. I first checked them out on their American website, and lusted after them. Maybelline hadn’t launched the VIVIDS in India (Which was a big miss for them), but, I would have been really unhappy if they didn’t launch these! So when Madam P told me that these have launched, I made a beeline towards the store, and within the next fifteen minutes, was the proud owner of not one, but two of these.

Now, the big question: what the heck is Lipgradation?

From Maybelline Website, I got this: Now you can wear brights every day the gradation effect way! With a unique cushion blender, you can smudge out the bold matte pigment to create a gradation effect look.

The idea behind Lipgradation is to give your lips a gradient effect – technically, this is what I have seen many Koreans do – they wear lipsticks and give it a gradient effect, rather than wearing them as a bright colour – it helps to make your lips look more natural, and at the same time, it also makes sure you get away wearing a bold shade. So, now you can wear a single colour as a stain or as a full-on lip colour.

Maybelline has introduced 8 shades, which are in shades of Fuchsia, Orange, Pinks, Reds, and Mauve shades. I picked up Pink 2 and Mauve 1.

The texture of these lip colours are wonderful. I have rarely come across a lip colour that glides on so easily, and yet, is not creamy – putting these on is quite easy, as they spread evenly, and the tip is slim enough to help line your lips and then fill in the colour. For gradient lips, start putting a bit of colour at the center, and then use the smudger to smudge it and give this a gradient effect.

Okay, disclaimer: Mauve 1 is actually a nude, and is a perfect My Lips But Better (MLBB) shade for me. I wore it both as a stain and also as a lipstick. As a stain, it reduced the pigmentations on my lips but did not completely cover it, but as a lip colour it completed covered pigmentations, so I would be wearing this as a lip colour quite a lot. Once applied, it did not transfer much, and that’s yet another point I am loving. Mauve 1 stayed on my lips for 4 hours or so when I did not eat or drink much, and transferred lightly. It went away after I had a meal, and I had to reapply, but that’s okay with me because I am all for reapplication.

On the other hand, Pink 2 was rather lovely on my hand, but on my lips, the stain looked much better than the colour put fully – it stands out quite starkly, and blending is a good idea. Pink 2 not only stayed on my lips, but also left a stain afterwards, and this one worked much better to create a gradient look, and I found this slightly patchy when you wear it properly. So, smudge this one out, and apply carefully.

This lasted for more than 5 hours on me without eating, and I had had some water during that time. It also did not smudge much after I used the smudger to make it look more stain-like. Both of these did not leave my lips dry and uncomfortable, which is yet another bonus!

Overall, these lip colours are quite good – decently priced and moderately long lasting. I am liking both shades, and might go get the Red 02 from the range as well.

  1. Is lip gradation is supposed to give a gradient effect which Korean and other south Asian makeup artists follow? Maybe I do not know much about this trend but in your lip swatch, I cannot see the gradient effect. Great review though!

    1. Ankita, I tried my best, but I am still new to gradient lips. Also the camera did not catch it proper – but looks nice, right?
