Maacher Jhol Film: An Experience

“বাড়িতে আমিও ফিরি রোজ
ঘরে ফেরাটাতো হয়না
আমাকে পারলে দত্তক নিয়ে নাও
পালাবো তোমার হাত ধরে
যত দূরে যাই
তোমাকে বুকের ভেতরে বয়ে নিয়ে বেড়াই “

Maacher Jhol is a film about food and love. The protagonist is Dev D/ Debdatta who leaves his family to follow his passion, and returns to the news of his mother’s illness. The film is personal to me because I am in it, albeit as an extra. So, its difficult to write something which can rationally analyse the scene without falling into the warp of some kind of bias.

However, I had a great deal of fun on the day of shoot. I played the role of a chef at Swissotel. Although I had no words to say, I loved being a part of the movie because what I liked was the attention to the food. A long time ago, a dear friend had said to me that food is very important to us, because it conjures up so many memories within us, and creates a space which only that can fill up. The concept of the film is based on its ability to relate to a time which is less complex and gone.

The music of the film, while limited, is used well. I love the way certain scenes were shot – in fact, I am linking a video here which has been shot beautifully, showcasing Kolkata, and the music by Anupam Roy evokes a nostalgia which is hard to miss. Maacher Jhol just completed its first successful week in Kolkata, and I am glad to say, the audience lapped it all up!
