Pork Cheese Dog with a Side of Coleslaw

One of the reasons why I write reviews on this blog is because I would want to recommend something to the readers. Well, this probably is the first time when I am not going to. This short review is about Rubi’s Grill, located in Dover Lane. Generally I give all new places a good measure to make sure they mark up, and I am writing this so that if the people concerned with the place see this, they may consider some changes in their menu.

First of all, let me tell you, this place has possibilities. The decor is charming, the service quite fast. And the servers are smart and sweet. Do you know the biggest turnoff though? The food.

Why? Because the food that was served to us just did not match up the price.

For example, the picture that you see above is the Cheese Dog. I chose the Pork Cheese Dog while my friend D chose the Chicken Cheese Dog. Both the Dogs had sausage from Kalman. And while I adore Kalman for their fantastic Hungarian sausages which I mostly like in soups and stews, I also know that their plain, UNCOOKED sausages HAVE to be cooked through before frying, otherwise you would run the risk of Trichinosis, which is a disease involving brain eating maggots.

You realize where I am going, right?

I got the sausages, covered with cheese that was Microwaved. Dudes, you are a GRILL. Please GRILL. Or at least, BROIL. And cook the damn sausage before putting it to unsuspecting customers. Or better, use a processed sausage like the rest of America. It will save you a lot of time.

Next Exhibit Please.

Onion Rings.

As you see, these were thin slices of red onions which were flash fried in a beer batter, which is also used on their fish ‘n chips. While I do admit that the fish ‘n chips they make here is quite nice, the quantity versus the price does not justify (I mean, 126/- for four pieces of fish and four pieces of fries? Yes, I counted. Actually it was hard not to.) at all. Onion Rings are NOT SUPPOSED to be made with shallots. They are supposed to be made with SWEET ONIONS.

Next.

Cheese Fries

Again, No Grill. Only Microwaved cheese over some very fat french fries. I like my fries thinner and twice fried, not boiled up and then put in the fryer. These were, however, more palatable, and would have been better if they had added a sauce with it.

I also had the Bacon Burger which was quite good, I daresay, because the patty was grilled (THANKFULLY SOMETHING WAS) and the bacon was not bacon, it was ham from Kalman but well, fried up with the fat it is good food all the same) it was better than the rest.

The menu as well as pricing needs some serious thought, because the food was mostly misses with a few palatable minor hits. I hope they improve.

  1. Well, when I entered I thought it was cute in a rustic Punjabi way. I think if they serve up food like tarka and roti and such other stuff they would be better off as the place suggests that. 😀

  2. fact of matter is, they do not have a grill. they have a large hot plate, which does not "grill". my chicken burger, the only thing i ever ordered, was over fried. the thick cut fries were decent, since i do like thick cut ones and not the mcd style thin ones. and what's with the music??? strains of sitar and tabla in a burger shack? and sarees and dhotis as decoration pieces???
