Grill & Chill Festival at Legacy Lounge, The Lalit Great Eastern, Kolkata

“So madam, would you like something vegetarian?”

Three heads vehemently nodded against such an atrocious idea. The very thought! Vegetarian! At a place where the menu boasted of Lamb Chops, Beef and Chicken? The Grill & Chill festival boasts of some interesting vegetarian grilled items though, like the Sweet Chilli Marinated Pineapple, or the Grilled Eggplant Topped with Tahini Yogurt Dressing.

Between the three of us, a bottle of Nine Hills Chenin Blanc was cracked open and poured, with a lovely, light fruity nose, and a semi-dry texture which rather beautifully edged into a berry-laced finish that lingered on my tongue. A bowl of rolls and butter was quickly demolished, the butter melting delicately on the warm bread.

The menu was kept short and simple – there are four options in each segment, and the selection comes with a glass of wine. For couples, the glass of wine becomes a bottle, so it is a good idea to take a partner in crime. M ordered the Chermoula Marinated Fish Steak, and the fish was nice and flaky, mildly sweet and tangy, on a bed of roasted vegetables.

Dijon Marinated Chicken Escallops

R and I had sanctimoniously decided to split our mains, and while she decided on the lamb chops, I decided on the Dijon Marinated Chicken Escallops with a side of mushroom jus. The chicken was moist,  encasing a generous dose of corn stuffing, and served over some roasted vegetables. I was not too fond of the mushroom jus, the chicken drippings a bit too browned by the time it was made, rendering it far more bitter than I would like. I was pretty happy with the roasted vegetables though, spearing the potatoes and fork-mashing them into submission before consuming.

I had high hopes from the lamb chop, which came with a Pepper Jus. Garlic and wine mildly scented the meat, but it was quite well done, as opposed to the medium-rare which I prefer. I liked the jus though – it was simple but effective.  The Grill & Chill menu is available till the 17th of this month at The Legacy Lounge at The Lalit Great Eastern, so this weekend is your last chance for a taste. Any vegetarian or non-vegetarian grill plus a glass of wine/beer for a single person is priced at INR 1200/- plus tax, while for couples, you can avail four beers/a glass of wine together with two vegetarian/non-vegetarian grills for 2500/- plus tax.
