Eat Out: Tung Fong, Park Street

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you would note that I have started adding location to my posts on the heading itself. This actually helps the user more than me, as a lot of people, when searching for the places I write about in this Kolkata food blog, comes across these posts more easily, if I specify where the place was.

So, a belated happy Holi and Easter. How was it for you? I absolutely loved mine. Ate a lot, drank a lot of, went out a lot, and had fun in short. And the grand finale was at Tung Fong, Park Street, a place which is close to my heart, as it is one of the best Kolkata-Chinese joints I have been to in my life, and boy, I have been to a lot of places which serves it, but without knowing about the cuisine and its nuances. It is a sister to Kim Ling, the most popular restaurant of Chinatown, Tangra, Kolkata, and has two other sisters, namely, Beijing (Chinatown, Tangra) and Mandarin (Deshapriya Park).

Diet coke. Lime. Ice. To chill my heart after a long walk.

Actually, it was supposed to be Amigos for Easter, but when we went there, the people told us that the place was booked and won’t be free before three, and they would call us when the table got free.

Slightly ruffled, we sat at a nearby Barista, drinking iced teas, till about 3.30 in the afternoon, and then the man from Amigos called up and said that he was holding the table for us for the last fifteen minutes, and should he let it go. When asked why he did not call us (as he had promised us he would) as soon as he got the table, he had no explanation, so we decided to go to Tung Fong for lunch.

As we reached somewhere around 4.00 p.m., the people there were eager to get us seated and immediately, menu cards were set in front of us. After a short moment of indecision, we decided to skip the splendid buffet and rather go A-La-Carte.

Kingfisher beer (135/- ) and Cheeselings to munch on.

The walk was a long one, and IDG decided to cool off with a beer, while S and I both decided on coke. Mine was a diet, and hers was the regular one, and we pondered over the menu for a short period of time before deciding on our food.

Condiments. from left to right – chillies in vinegar, sweet chilli sauce, and hot green chilli sauce

S was not feeling up to eating chicken soup, so she decided to go with a Vegetarian Hot and Sour soup (80/-). I stuck to my order of Thai Soup (104/-) and IDG decided on the Smoked lamb. Our soups came in soon after and I am sorry I did not get a photo of S’s soup, but I have to say, it was amazing, with little chunks of silken tofu in it, and a broth which was TASTY. It was the first time I had a vegetarian soup envy.

Thai Soup

I should not complain though. My Thai Soup was exactly what I was looking for. A bowl of warm goodness, with minced chicken, black mushrooms, and an assortment of herbage in a thick soup, it was everything I asked for, and as usual, I reached for a dab of vinegar and hot chilli sauce to customize it.

Smoked Lamb

Before we could further talk, the waiter came over with a big plate of the lamb and proceeded to divide it among us before anyone said anything. The picture I am posting here is the first helping of the half-plate of Smoked Lamb (209/-) we had ordered which was incredibly soft and sweet taste wise, and a portion size which was more than generous. Although I found the sugar to be too chunky and not caramelized enough, I was still happy with the taste, which was slightly smoky, with a generous amount of chopped garlic, chillies and sesame thrown in as well.

Chicken in Hot Garlic Sauce

There was a 20-minute wait between our starters and main course, and we were slightly restless, taking photos and generally making faces because we were bored. There were very few wait staff at this point, and the place only had two tables which were filled. I guessed that this was possibly because the lunch hour had just ended.

Vegetarian Chow Mien

For the main course, we had ordered a vegetarian chow mien and half-plate of Chicken in Hot Garlic Sauce (189/-). The chow was perfectly fried, not too oily, and tasted great with the chicken in hot garlic sauce. I loved the combination so much that I think I ate the most of it, mixing the stir-fried noodles with the gravy from the chicken and slathering the lot with copious amounts of chilli sauce. For me, this was perfect, as I knew that I would not eat much of the other dish ordered.

Vegetarian Chow Mien

S had spied the Crabmeat with Button Mushrooms (208/-) on the menu and ordered half-plate of that, with a serving of steamed rice (90/-). While I have nothing against the gravy, I had a problem with the crab itself, which had too many bits of the shell in it for me to enjoy. The rice was all right but it was not what you should be eating with Chinese gravies.

Crab with Button Mushrooms over Steamed Rice
Our lunch left us quite happily filled and IDG could not finish his beer in the end, and it cost us about 1423/- including VAT and Service Tax. I have to say, apart from the crab, which I found underwhelming, I was quite happy with the lunch, and this is possibly the reason why I would be giving the place a big thumbs up for clean decor, nice food and very reasonable price. So, well, All’s well and all.
