I shall give you a few moments to adore the cuteness of the Christmas décor of Mrs. Magpie.
Awww.
Awww (sighs continue).
And here’s some more.
You know what’s special about this post? Apart from the fact that its a preview of one of the cutest displays I have seen in my life, some of the photos have been taken by an 8-year old girl, who decided to contribute to my blog by adding some photos to it. I will not tell you which photos she took, but you can guess!
Mrs. Magpie has been one of my favourite places in Kolkata, ever since I discovered it back in 2012. The quaint décor, fluffy scones, and sinful hot chocolate made me happy the first time, and I went back to sample more food. This Christmas, they have an assortment of delights, which are perfect for sharing with a friend or two. The special menu is in their stores now (both Keyatala and Kasba), and will be there till the 5th of January, 2016.
The Christmas afternoon tea, therefore, is a perfect lovely meal for two. There are four kinds of finger sandwiches to choose from – for the strictly non-vegetarian, there is the Turkey with Cranberry Chutney or the Roast Mutton with Mint Chutney, and for those who are vegetarian, you get the option to pick from the Blue Cheese and Rocket, or the Sweet Potato sandwiches. Also, there’s a big pot of tea, Cranberry and White Chocolate Scones (which were piping hot, and therefore, perfect with loads of butter and jam), and a slice of the Date and Walnut Cake, Stollen, and Cointreau Chocolate Mincemeat Cake.
For those who love appeasing their sweet tooth, you should ideally try out the Christmas Goodies Platter of Mrs. Magpie (INR 325/-). This contains slices of the Date and Walnut Cake (which is rich and rather decadent), Cointreau Chocolate Mincemeat Cake (gloriously boozy, with touches of citrus and chocolate), Almond Brittle (my favourite of the lot!), Chocolate Fudge (unusual with the addition of thick molasses), Maple Shortbread (D and S both loved this the most!), slices of Stollen (as per the management,Mrs. Magpie was one of the first places in Kolkata to make these), and the Fruit Cake Cupcake, with a marzipan man on top of it. S bit off the head of the man, and looked at us with vicarious pleasure written all over her face! I am sure she is nurturing a secret love for cannibalism somewhere.
The Focaccia bread was deliciously fluffy, and, after they sandwiched bits of mutton and sweet mint chutney and grilled, they became crisp outside, with a sweetness which beckoned the Christmas spirit to start all the fun!
We settled for plenty of scones though! After two rounds of the Cranberry and White Chocolate Scones, the Cheese Scones were calling us, so we sighed our defeat and ordered some of that too.
And if you tell me that these, piping hot, with plenty of cheese, topped with butter and jam aren’t worth the calories, then well, you can take a running leap off the nearest cliff, because I shall remain firm in my judgement.
And of course, who can forget the beautifully decorated cakes of Mrs. Magpie? You would also find the Stollen, Date and Walnut Cake, Cointreau Chocolate Mincemeat Cake, and other such goodies on offer, which you can take away. For Christmas, they have plenty of options to pick from – with a plethora of beautiful decorations, which look gorgeous!
If you love cookies, then there are beautiful Christmas cookies wrapped in cellophane for gifting others. They also have a beautiful Christmas Cookie bucket, filled with cookies and perfect for celebrating the season of merriment with family and friends.
Now for the fun part! A Christmas Giveaway!
